The festive season is here and it’s time to decorate your Christmas tree! But with so many options and styles to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide how to decorate your tree. Does the idea of holiday décor stress you out? Do you want to embrace a more minimalist look this holiday season? In this blog post, I’ll explain how to create a beautiful and elegant tree that emphasizes simplicity and sophistication with any type of Christmas tree. Whether you prefer a more rustic, modern, or traditional Christmas tree, here are some tips to help you create a beautiful and festive minimalist Christmas tree.

Flocked Christmas tree styled with minimal decorations

I find each year I crave something different with the theme of our tree. This year I leaned into a more traditional tree, while other years I’ve gone more rustic. If you like the look of our flocked tree, I actually purchased it from Walmart and I am pleased with the quality. I’ll link it here.

These tips can be applied whether you have a small tree or a larger tree, an artificial tree, or a real tree. Just because you’re wanting a minimalist Christmas tree look, doesn’t mean it will not create a big impact in your home over the winter holidays.

1. Stick to a Theme

My first tip would be to choose a theme for your tree and stick to it. For example, you could create a winter wonderland theme with snowflakes and white ornaments, or a Nordic-inspired theme with wooden ornaments and simple white lights. Sticking to a theme will help create a cohesive and elegant look.

2. Choose a Color Scheme

Just because you’re going the minimalist route does not mean your tree needs to lack bright colors. Pops of traditional bright red can be absolutely stunning on a simple Christmas tree. However, if you’re craving a calmer look consider a neutral color palette, such as white and silver. You can also experiment with metallics like gold or copper to add a touch of glam. Consider colors that complement your existing décor and create a cohesive look. Traditional colors include red and green, while a more modern approach could involve metallics like silver or gold. You can also opt for a monochromatic theme, using different shades of the same color.

3. Add some Christmas lights

Before adding any decorations, start with the lights. Choose a string of lights that fits the size of your tree and consider using LED lights for energy efficiency. Begin at the top of the tree and work your way down, wrapping the lights around the branches in a spiral pattern. Be sure to spread the lights evenly and avoid overloading any one area.

Lighting is an important element of Christmas decorating. For a minimalist tree, opt for simple white lights or warm white globe lights. You can also experiment with the placement of the lights to create a unique and artistic effect. Adding different types of lights, such as fairy lights or twinkle lights, also creates interest and a beautiful glow to a minimal tree.

4. Hang Ornaments

Now it’s time for the fun part – hanging ornaments on your tree! Start with larger ornaments and place them evenly around the tree. Fill in any gaps with smaller ornaments, alternating colors and styles for a balanced look. Be sure to hang ornaments at varying heights to create a sense of depth. Also, hanging ornaments at varying depths is a great way to fill in sparse branches while adding interest. Play with different sizes of ornaments. When choosing ornaments for your minimalist tree, opt for simple designs. Look for ornaments that are geometric or have a modern, abstract design. Avoid overly detailed or ornate pieces.

5. Add Special Touches

To give your tree a personal touch, consider adding special ornaments or decorations that have sentimental value. I believe this is what adds all the holiday cheer to any tree. These could be handmade decorations, ornaments collected on travels, natural elements like pine cones you collected on a walk, or family heirlooms.

Something I did this year was DIY my own colorful ornaments. I’m lucky enough to have a large ornament collection. Some of my older ones were looking a bit tired and I wasn’t crazy about the colors anymore. With some simple craft paint and metallic paint, I completely changed the look of them, into ornaments I would love to use again! This was an easy way to add unique character to my tree at no extra cost, because I used what I had already.

6. Less is More

When it comes to minimalist Christmas tree decorating, less is definitely more. Limit the number of ornaments and decorations you use and choose pieces that are simple and elegant. Avoid overly complex designs or pieces that are too busy. Don’t be afraid to embrace some negative space on your tree. In fact, negative space is a key component of minimalist interior design. Allow some branches to show through and avoid over-crowding your tree with decorations.

7. Don’t Forget the Tree Skirt or Collar

Don’t forget to add a tree skirt or collar to your tree. This not only covers the base of the tree but also adds a decorative touch. Nothing worse than seeing the feet at the bottom of a faux Christmas tree! Choose a skirt that complements your color scheme and style, whether it’s a rustic burlap or a more elegant velvet. I like to use a tree collar because it adds fullness to the base of the tree. I painted ours gold this year because it creates a warm feel. It was originally white from Michaels. Also, tree collars are a great option if, like me, you have pets and a robot vacuum running around constantly. If you can relate, going with a tree collar means you won’t have to fuss with adjusting a tree skirt constantly.

8. Finish with a Tree Topper

A tree-topper really completes the look – choose from a traditional star, angel, or even a unique decoration that reflects your personal style. You could also use a simple bow or a wreath as a tree topper. I bought ours from Walmart. If you’re interested, I’ll link it here.

Decorating a minimalist Christmas tree is a fun and creative way to get into the holiday spirit. By following these tips, you can create a beautiful and festive tree that reflects your personal style, complements your existing décor, and has a huge impact. So, gather your family, put on some holiday music, and let the decorating begin! By choosing a theme and color scheme, and embracing negative space, you can create a tree that is modern, elegant, and sophisticated. So, this holiday season, why not embrace the simplicity and beauty of minimalism?
