Are you tired of looking at the same old table in your living room? Do you want to add a unique design touch to your home décor? Why not try building your own cheap table top DIY? Not only will it add a personalized touch to your space, but it can also be a fun and rewarding project to take on. Follow along as I turn the snidad basket into a piece of furniture, with a wood tabletop DIY. I also share some tips for how to style round tables, a little history about rattan furniture and the boho interior design style, upcycling, and how to mix wood tones in your space! I love the boho style that this IKEA hack adds. The best part is that I constructed this side table for under $100, and it takes minimal effort to build!

Here’s what you’ll need to get started on your wood tabletop DIY:

Materials:

  • 18” wooden round plaque
  • Snidad Ikea Basket
  • Sandpaper (120 grit)
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)
  • Clear top coat
  • 4  zip ties
  • Hot glue
  • Glue gun
  • Wire snips
  • Scrap cardboard
  • Pinter’s Pyramid Stands (Optional)
  • Tack cloth or microfiber cloth
  • 2 foam brushes
  • Pencil
  • Tape measure or ruler

Step-by-step Instructions:

1. Prep your work space

Place the scrap cardboard down to protect the flat surface you’ll be working on.

2. Sand

Sand the top and edges of your wooden plaque until it’s smooth and free of splinters. This also opens up the wood grain to allow the stain to be applied more evenly. Even if you’re planning to paint your DIY table top, I wouldn’t skip this step. Sanding helps the paint you’re using adhere much better to the wood.

3. Clean up the dust

For the best results, wipe away the dust with a dry microfiber cloth or tack cloth.

4. Set up for staining

Set out four painter’s pyramid stands. I love using these because they help elevate your project off the cardboard. This allows you to stain or paint the sides of your plaque without it sticking to the cardboard. If you don’t have these it’s not a big deal. You could consider using different risers like some scrap wood or a cardboard box. However, these are a great idea, especially if you’re crafty like me and would use them often. Place your round wood plaque on top of the pyramid stands.

5. Apply Stain

Apply a coat of stain to the top and sides of the plaque with a foam brush. I used an oil-based stain so I allowed it to dry for 24 hours before applying the top coat. You don’t have to wait this long if you’re using a water-based stain or paint. They typically dry in 2 hours, but double-check the label to be sure. I used a the color Natural 209 from Minwax. Natural stain means it doesn’t add color, just enhances the woodgrain and the tones of wood that are already there. You can get creative and go with different colors, and make the perfect choice for what works better in your space.

6. Apply Topcoat

Apply two coats of topcoat to the top and sides of the wood plaque with a foam brush. Allow each coat to fully dry between coats. I used a satin finish because I wanted it to have a touch of shine. Again, you can be creative here! If you want your wooden table top to have a high shine finish, or a matte finish, you have the option! Allow the topcoat to dry overnight.

7. Remove basket handles

Remove the handles from the snidad basket. I did this by clipping the rattan that was wrapping the handles to the basket with wire snips. Then, I peeled the rattan wrapping off to reveal the nails that were holding the handle to the basket. I pulled the handle straight off at this point by hand. It may take a bit of strength to pull off but they do come out nice and clean. There’s no glue or anything holding them in place, just the nails. This side of the basket will face the ground, so you won’t see the nail holes.

8. Prep to attach the wood tabletop DIY to the basket base

Remove the painter’s pyramids and flip the wood round plaque over. Place the bottom of the basket onto the round plaque, making sure it is centered by using a tape measure or ruler. Mark the location with a pencil. It’s hard to describe with words but in the picture below you’ll see how I marked the basket location with a pencil. The bottom of the basket has a cross shape. I wanted to secure each end of the cross shape to the bottom of the wooden tabletop. I marked each end of the cross shape on both sides, leaving two dots.

9. Apply hot glue

Remove the basket and apply hot glue in a strip between the two dots and adhere a zip tie. Then, add another layer of hot glue over the zip tie to really secure it to the bottom of the new table top. I wanted to fasten the bottom and top of the table together this way in case I ever wanted to take it apart and use the pieces for something else in the future. Also, it ended up being really secure and sturdy! Allow the hot glue to dry and cool completely before moving to the next step

10. Secure the DIY wood tabletop to the basket base

Line the cross on the bottom of the basket back up with the zip ties and secure them together. Clip off any excess plastic on the zip ties with the wire snips. Flip your end table over and reveal the finished look! This wood tabletop DIY is such an easy project for any skill level.

Round table décor ideas (styling tips for round wood tables)

Styling a wood tabletop DIY round table can be a fun and easy way to add some personality to your living room. It can be done in many different ways. The first step is deciding whether you want to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere or a sleek and modern look. The good news is there are many ways to style a round table that will suit your taste and style.

Use a tray

One classic way to style a round table is to use a tray in the center of the table as a base for your décor. This will help to keep your items organized and contained. Choose a tray that is both functional and stylish. For example, a mirrored or metallic tray can add some glamour to your space, while a wooden or woven tray can create a more natural and organic look.

Play with heights

Consider the height of your items. A mix of heights can create visual interest and depth. For example, you can place a tall vase or candlestick in the center of the tray, surrounded by smaller items such as books, coasters, and decorative objects. This will create a layered effect that draws the eye in.

Group smaller items together

Another popular way to style a round coffee table is to use a grouping of smaller items. This can be achieved by using a cluster of decorative objects such as candles, vases, and small sculptures. Choose items that have a similar color or theme to create a cohesive look. For example, a group of white candles in different shapes and sizes can create a serene and peaceful atmosphere, while a mix of metallic objects can add some glam to your space.

Use books

You can also use books to style your coffee table. Stack a few books on top of each other, either vertically or horizontally, and place a decorative object on top. This will create a focal point that is both functional and stylish. You can also use books to add some color to your space. Choose books with colorful spines or covers that match your décor.

Consider color and texture

In terms of color and texture, there are many ways to style a round table. Choose items that complement your existing décor. For example, if you have a neutral color scheme, you can add some pops of color with decorative objects such as flowers or colorful coasters. If you have a more eclectic style, you can mix and match textures such as wood, metal, and glass to create a unique and interesting look.

Finally, remember that styling a round table is a personal and creative process. Experiment with different arrangements and items until you find a look that you love. Have fun with it and don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things. Styling can do a lot for a simple table, and really make all the difference in your living space.

Is rattan furniture in style?

Rattan furniture has been a popular choice for interior design enthusiasts for decades, and has recently seen a resurgence in popularity. This natural material is highly versatile, lending itself well to a wide range of design styles. Whether you prefer a traditional, rustic look, or a more modern and sleek aesthetic, rattan furniture can be incorporated seamlessly into your home décor.

Rattan can be a great addition to any home

Rattan furniture can be found in a variety of styles, from traditional and rustic to modern and sleek. Another reason for the popularity of rattan furniture is its natural beauty. Rattan has a warm, earthy tone that complements a wide range of design styles and color palettes. Its texture and finish can vary depending on the species of rattan used, but generally has a natural, organic look. This lends itself well to a variety of interior design styles, from bohemian to coastal and everything in between.

One of the ways that rattan furniture is being incorporated into modern interior design is through the use of bold, modern shapes. Designers are using rattan to create sculptural pieces that are both functional and visually appealing. These pieces are often combined with other materials, such as metal or glass, to create a sleek, modern look. Rattan furniture is also being used in unexpected ways, such as in lighting fixtures and decorative objects. With its warm, earthy tone and natural texture, rattan furniture adds a touch of natural beauty to any space.

What is bohemian (boho) style interior design?

Boho interior design style, also known as bohemian or boho-chic style, is a popular design trend that has its roots in the counterculture movements of the 1960s and 1970s. This style is characterized by its eclectic mix of colors, patterns, and textures, as well as its emphasis on natural materials and a carefree, relaxed vibe. The term “boho” is short for bohemian, which refers to a person who lives an unconventional lifestyle, often associated with artists, musicians, and writers. The bohemian lifestyle is all about freedom, creativity, and individuality, and this ethos is reflected in the boho interior design style. The origins of the boho style can be traced back to the hippie movement of the 1960s. This movement was characterized by its rejection of mainstream culture and its embrace of alternative lifestyles. Hippies embraced a carefree, bohemian lifestyle that was reflected in their fashion, music, and home décor.

Bohemian style is influenced by travel

The boho interior design style was also influenced by the global travel and cultural exchange that took place during the 1960s and 1970s. This era saw a surge in interest in Eastern spirituality and a fascination with exotic cultures and traditions. This interest was reflected in the boho style, which often incorporates elements of Indian, Moroccan, and other Middle Eastern and African cultures.

Mixing textures and color in the boho style

The boho interior design style is all about mixing and matching different styles, patterns, and textures. This style is characterized by its use of bright, bold colors, such as reds, oranges, and pinks, as well as its emphasis on natural materials, such as wood, rattan, and jute. Textiles are also an important element of the boho style, with an emphasis on woven fabrics, such as tapestries, kilims, and macramé. One of the signature elements of the boho style is the use of layered textures and patterns. This can be achieved by layering different textiles on top of each other, such as a colorful rug on top of a jute rug, or by mixing and matching different patterns, such as stripes, florals, and geometric prints. Another key element of the boho style is the use of natural materials and elements, such as plants, feathers, and shells. Plants are often used to add a touch of greenery and life to a space, while feathers and shells can add a sense of whimsy and playfulness.

Consider vintage and repurposed items for a boho style

The boho style is also characterized by its emphasis on repurposed and vintage items. This can include a thrift store find, old furniture such as mid-century modern chairs or antique dressers, as well as repurposed items, such as an old ladder turned into a bookshelf or a vintage suitcase used as a side table.

How to mix wood tones in a space

Mixing wood tones in interior design can be a challenging task, but when done in the right place, the end result can add depth, warmth, and interest to a space. Whether you are trying to mix different wood finishes and various colors in a single room or throughout your home, there are several key tips to keep in mind to help you achieve a cohesive and harmonious look.

1. Start with a neutral base

When mixing wood tones, it is important to start with a neutral base. This can include neutral wall colors, flooring, and large furniture pieces such as sofas and chairs. A neutral base is the best way to anchor the space and create a cohesive foundation for your different wood tones.

2. Use a variety of wood finishes

When mixing wood tones, it is important to use a variety of finishes to create interest and depth. This can include natural wood finishes, stained finishes, and painted finishes. Mix and match these finishes throughout the space to create a harmonious balance.

3. Choose a dominant wood tone.

When mixing wood tones, it is important to choose a dominant wood tone to anchor the space. This can be the wood tone of a large furniture piece such as a dining room table or a prominent architectural feature such as a ceiling beam. Once you have established a dominant wood tone, use it as a reference point for the other wood tones in the space.

4. Use a color wheel

When mixing wood tones, it can be helpful to use a color wheel to guide your choices. Choose wood tones that are complementary or analogous to each other on the color wheel. This will help to create a cohesive and harmonious look.

5. Consider the undertones

When mixing wood tones, it is important to consider the undertones of each wood finish. Some woods have warm undertones, while others have cool undertones. Make sure that the different wood tones you choose have similar undertones to create a cohesive look.

6. Use texture

When mixing wood tones, it is important to use texture to create interest and balance. This can include rough-hewn wood finishes, smooth finishes, and textured finishes such as shiplap or beadboard. Mix and match these textures throughout the space to create a harmonious balance.

7. Add contrast

When mixing wood tones, it is important to add contrast to create interest and depth. This can include using a dark wood finish against a light wood finish or using a glossy finish against a matte finish. Mix and match these contrasts throughout the space to create a visually interesting look.

8. Use accessories

When mixing wood tones, it is important to use accessories to tie the different wood finishes together. This can include using rugs, throw pillows, and artwork that incorporate the different wood tones in the space. This will help to create a cohesive and harmonious look.

Mixing wood tones in interior design can be a challenging task, but by following these tips, you can achieve a cohesive and harmonious look that adds depth, warmth, and interest to your space. Remember to start with a neutral base, use a variety of wood finishes, choose a dominant wood tone, consider the undertones, use texture, add contrast, and use accessories to tie everything together. With these tips in mind, you can create a space that is both visually interesting and harmonious.

Why I decided to upcycle my IKEA basket for this wood tabletop DIY

Upcycling furniture is an important practice for a number of reasons. The basket wasn’t functional for me. I’m not crazy about seeing what’s inside a basket. I prefer items to be hidden, it creates a cleaner look. With the snidad basket, there are a lot of openings and you can see right through. However, I purchased this basket because I loved the design and the curve of the rattan shapes. I didn’t want to donate it or throw it away, contributing to the growing problem of landfill waste.

Upcycling what you already have reduces waste

One of the most important reasons why upcycling furniture is important is its positive impact on the environment. The furniture industry is one of the largest contributors to landfills, with millions of tons of furniture being thrown away each year. By upcycling furniture, we can reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. In addition to reducing waste, upcycling furniture also reduces the need for new resources to be used in the production of new furniture. This is because upcycling uses existing materials, rather than relying on new resources. This can help to conserve natural resources and reduce the environmental impact of furniture production.

Upcycling this basket saved me so much money!

Not only did I create this cheap DIY table for less than $100, but I also got to repurpose an item I already spent money on that I wasn’t in love with, and turn it into something I love. Rather than buying a new end table, this wood tabletop DIY allowed me to transform what I already had, giving it new life as a unique table.

Repurposing your home décor inspires creativity

This easy wood tabletop DIY project inspired greater creativity and personalization in my home décor. More than a simple purchase from any retailer would. Rather than discarding the basket, I transformed it into something new, functional, and a perfect solution that can be used and enjoyed for a very long time.

Creating this DIY table top for an end table is a great way to add a unique look to your home, and is a really simple design. It’s also a fun and rewarding DIY project that can be completed in just a few hours. So, what are you waiting for?
